Um dos jogos mais aguardados dos quartos-de-final foi logo o primeiro, em jeito de final antecipada tendo em conta a performance de ambas as equipas até aqui. A Espanha acabaria por vergar a Alemanha já no prolongamento e deitou por terra a aspiracao de 16 de vós que colocaram a Alemanha campea mas também a de José Monteiro que esteve na lideranca mas já nao vai conseguir sair vencedor com este desfecho. Seguiu-se o jogo entre as duas selecoes com mais bitaites para vencedor, o qual acabou por se decidir através da marca de grandes penalidades.
